Today on Forbidden Love Fridays...

...the '99 Chevy Cavalier Coupe.

Kinja'd!!!

I know what you're thinking. "Are you insane?" Yeah, kind of. I just really like the way it looks. (It has to be the late-model version with the fish-mouth grille, though). 1990s American cars have been tarnished by the domestic ricer crowd.

I've always wanted to take one just like this, put some tasteful chrome on it, and stanced mooneyes w/ whitewalls. Is that a good idea or what?

if I was going to go down the halls of forbidden cavalier fruit...I would have to go with an old Z24, square rims and all

I used to drive my sister's hand me down 97 Cavalier. There are times when I miss having a little beater that was ok on gas, but not as good as it should be. And it was surprisingly reliable. But then again there wasn't much to break.

Yea, I always thought that gen Z24 was a looker - square wheels and all.

The one after is just, blah.

But hey, it's your dream. Whatever floats your boat.

See a doctor if love for a 99 Cavalier coupe persists for more than 14 years after producion. Stop taking your current medication if this car sounds good to you.

Sorry, just why that generation? The older ones were much cooler!

Except for the matte black-bumpered ones, and the 2003-05s, I think the Cavalier was a good-looking car.

It's what's underneath that body that is absolutely shocking. I have yet to ride in one where the front seatbacks weren't broken internally.

My buddy Had one of these as his first car probably 12 years ago it had the 2.8l V6 and a 5sp stick, that thing would lay down some pretty good rubber for what it was. So I guess I kinda have to agree with you I still kinda like these.

I like the late-model ones because they're uncluttered. That's why I really like '90s car design. Simplicity is beauty, and the newer Cavaliers (the one pictured, the '95-'99) is nothing but smooth lines.

Uhhh..

I like it. It's like what if Chevy tries to built a Honda Del Sol.

I appreciate someone who appreciates such things. I can't think of much in the 95+ that appeals to me. Tons of LH chryslers with the cab forward design, round Volvos, horrible build quality Mercedes etc.

But hey, stay strong, some day these will be classics.

Survey question: what age bracket could we put you in?

Thank you. I really like the LH-platform Chryslers too, and also some of those '90s Lincoln coupes (the Mark VIII if I remember correctly).

I'm sixteen, like the Cadillac. Speaking of '90s-ish future classics, I keep urging my relatives to buy 2004 Oldsmobiles. They'll be expensive in thirty years.

I HAD ONE

it was red and it had the manual, which were apparently rare. it was my first manual car, and yes of course i determined it was quite capable of melting tires.

it was actually.. not a bad car. the exhaust sounded cool, it had a removable sunroof. for a kid in high school it did the trick i guess. i traded it in for a Mazda Protege, and i got the trim level that had the same twincam motor as the miata, but mounted sideways.

I remember back in the day, my friends and I considered a Z24 with a 3.1 and 5 spd to be a quick car and always checked the badges before challenging a Cavalier with one of our 4cyl shitboxes. We're all more than a little jaded nowadays in the era of 300+hp daily driver commuter cars.
